Signs That You Have A Blocked Drain
By recognising the signs of a blocked drain you can save both time and money, by getting it fixed before it become a major problem.
1. Shower Draining Slowly
If your shower drains slowly, or makes a strange gurgling noise, it is a sign that your shower drain is blocked. Common causes of blocked showers are hair balls that slowly build up and block your drain over time.
3. Kitchen Sink Draining Slowly
A kitchen sink draining slowly is sign that you have a blocked drain. However the cause is likely to be food and grease that has gone down your sink. In fact, grease blockages are common for kitchen sinks.
5. Cracked Walls or Floors
If you noticed either cracked walls or floors, it is also an indication that you may have a blocked drain.
2. Toilet Not Flushing Correctly
Often a bad odour, along with difficulties flushing your toilet are signs that your toilet is blocked. Quite often the cause is the wrong things being flushed down the toilet. This includes sanitary products, baby wipes and nappies.
4. Puddles Outside Your Home
If you have water puddles outside your home, when it is has not been raining, then it is another indication that there is a blocked drain.
6. Bathroom Sink Draining Slowly
A bathroom sink that slowly drains is a sign that you have a blockage. Main causes are both objects being pushed down the drain as well as a build of grease.
MAIN CAUSES OF BLOCKED DRAINS
There are a lot of reasons why your drains may be blocked. Some common reasons include hair, tissues, toilet paper, sanitary products and nappies being placed down a sink or toilet. Other causes include anything from jewellery, soap and even food going down the drain. Over time, a blockage builds up and the flow of water gets slower and slower until it stops altogether. The end result is a blocked drain.
Tree roots are another major reason why a lot of drains get blocked. Tree roots work their way into pipes. This results in drains getting blocked over time. It is particularly common for older homes in the Sydney area that have clay pipes. This is because clay pipes develop small cracks as they age. This is enough for a tree root to find its way into a pipe.
Watch Chris In Action Clearing a Blocked Drain Caused by Tree Roots
In this video, local Sydney Plumber Chris Smith takes you through how and why tree roots cause drain blockages in both clay and PVC plumbing pipes.
The best way to avoid having tree roots get into your drains and blocking them is to have an annual drain clean.
Blocked Drains due to Grease Blockages
Blocked Drains caused by grease are very common. This is because oil, fats and grease are often washed down sinks. Over time it solidifies and causes a blockage in your drains.
In this video local Sydney Plumber Chris Smith shows you what happens when this happens.
How we Fix Blocked Drains
We use various techniques and equipment to fix blocked drains – both drains inside your home and outside. We have extensive experience in fixing all types of blocked drains. In addition, we have the local knowledge when it comes to fixing blocked drains in Sydney’s North Shore and Northern Beaches.
STEP ONE - Locate Blockage
The first step in fixing a blocked drain is to find exactly where the blockage is located. Usually different equipment and techniques are used depending on where the blockage is located. For example, a blockage close to the entrance of a drain may only require a plunger or closet auger to clear them.
We often use a CCTV camera to accurately locate where a blockage is.
STEP TWO - Clear Blockage
Once the blockage has been located, we determine the most appropriate equipment to clear the drain. We often use a water jetter which has water pressure strong enough to cut the roots of trees.
For more difficult jobs we use a Water FlexShaft Cleaning Tool. This is cutting edge drain cleaning equipment for those tougher jobs.
What Equipment We Use To Fix Blocked Drains
At Eze-Flow Plumbing we use that latest drain clearing and cleaning technology and equipment.
What is a Water Jetter?
At Eze-Flow Plumbing we use a high-pressure water jet that cuts the roots at the circumference of the pipe. This is done in preference to tearing at it with the old electric eels.
A water jet is also very good at cleaning grease lines. This is because a foaming solution is added to the water. This foaming solution dissolves the grease in the pipe.
What is a Water FlexShaft?
A Water FlexShaft Drain Cleaning Tool is a new breed of equipment used to clear blocked drains. It is used to compliment our Water Jetting and Mini Eel equipment.
It is well suited to tough root blockages and grease blockages. In addition, it is very handy in high-rise apartment blocks and commercial drain cleaning. This is because it is hand portable and doesn’t need water hoses or a petrol engine to operate.
What is a SeeSnake?
A SeeSnake or CCTV Drain Camera is our eyes in the ground when we are clearing blocked drains and pipes. Our plumbers can be working on a section up to 50m away downstream in the pipe and with the use of the CCTV Camera, we can see exactly what is happening on our screen.
That’s why we highly recommend using the CCTV Drain Camera on every drain clean as it is the only way to be 100% certain that the blockage has been completely cleared.
How to Avoid Blocked Drains?
Keeping your home drains free of obstructions, will greatly help in preventing the inconvenience and cost of getting your drain unblocked.
Here are a few tips on how to do this:
- Don’t dispose food down your sink. This includes vegetable scraps, coffee grounds and eggshells
- Dispose grease and oil in jars rather than down the sink
- Don’t flush nappies, paper towels, sanitary products, baby wipes and cat litter down your toilet
- Avoid washing concrete, cement and joint substances down a drain
- Place food and hair catchers in your showers and sinks
- Organise an annual check of your drains. This is particularly important for older homes in Sydney
