Signs That You Have A Blocked Toilet

Recognising the signs that your toilet is starting to have a blockage problem will save you time and money, by getting it fixed before it become a major problem.

Remember, if you have a blocked toilet, the worst thing you can do is to flush it. This is because you may cause sewerage to spill over the toilet bowl onto your bathroom floor. Instead give us a call and we will attend urgently.

  • 1. Toilet Won't Flush

If your toilet won’t flush then you definitely have problem that needs to be fixed fast. It could be just a simple blockage. However, it may be caused by something else. This includes the water level being too low or a problem with the inlet valve or outlet valve inside the cistern which controls the flushing function.

  • 2. Bad Odour Coming From The Toilet

Often a bad odour is a sign there is something causing a blockage. Quite often the cause is the wrong things being flushed down the toilet. This includes sanitary products, baby wipes and nappies.

  • 3. Water Level Is Low In The Toilet Bowl

There are a few reasons why the water level in a toilet bowl is low. Some of the causes are easy fixes. However, it could be a sign of something more serious. This includes a sewer drain being blocked.

  • 4. Toilet Gurgles When You Flush

Another common sign that your toilet is becoming blocked is when it makes a gurgling noise when you flush it.  The gurgling is caused by the blockage not allowing equal ventilation when the toilet is flushed. This causes the air to be sucked back through the toilet water, hence the gurgling sounds. This is a sign the pipe is almost fully blocked and you should call a plumber immediately.

Main Causes Of Blocked Toilets

Apart from tree roots in the main sewer line, the most common reason your toilet is blocked is that something has gone down it that shouldn’t have. This includes hair, tissues, sanitary products, wet wipes, newspapers, and nappies being placed down the toilet.

Even jewellery, soap and food gets flushed down the toilet. Over time, a blockage builds up and the toilet can’t be flushed.

If in doubt, just remember the Sydney Water campaign – that only the 3 P’s go down the toilet!

How Eze-Flow Plumbing Fixes Blocked Toilets

We use various techniques and equipment to fix blocked toilets. In fact, we have extensive experience in fixing blocked toilets – especially for Sydney’s North Shore and Northern Beaches.

STEP 1: Identify Where the Toilet Blockage is Located

Most toilet blockages on higher levels, such as units or office buildings, can usually be cleared with a plunger. This is because it is a soft blockage. A soft blockage is caused when too much toilet paper or the wrong type of paper (eg baby wipes) go down the toilet and clogs. This sort of blocked drain can easily be cleared with a plunger.

If the blocked toilet is on the ground floor it could be tree roots or a collapsed pipe underground and fixing the blockage is more complex.

STEP 2: Locate the Overflow Relief Gully (ORG) for Surcharge

Firstly, we locate and check the overflow relief gully (ORG) or any sewer inspection points for surcharge. If there is surcharge it means that the toilet is blocked further down the line as the blockage is somewhere between the sewer main and that inspection point.

If there is no surcharge present and the only thing affected in the property is the toilet then we would attempt to unblock the toilet with a plunger. If this is unsuccessful, we use other hand tools such as air snake and toilet auger.

STEP 3: Locate Outside Inspection Point

If the above steps to unblock the toilet are unsuccessful, then the blockage is in the outside main line. This means the blockage will need to be cleared from an accessible inspection point. Unfortunately, if you don’t have any outside inspection points then your toilet will need to be removed to create access to the drain.

We then use the high pressure water jetter to break up the blockage and allow the sewerage and water to drain away.

STEP 4: CCTV Drain Camera to Identify Cause of Toilet Blockage

If the toilet is still blocked, then we use a CCTV drain camera to visually inspect the line. This is to identify the cause of the toilet blockage before we continue further with the water jetter. If there are tree roots in the sewer line we will continue to water jet and ensure all roots are chopped out. If it’s a collapsed pipe, we will need to quote further works to dig up and repair the sewer line.

Planning on Renovating your Bathroom?

We provide advice on the best toilet system for your home or office.

At Eze-Flow Plumbing we always recommend you speak with a plumber before you purchase a new toilet suite on your own. Not all toilets can fit the layout of the existing plumbing of a bathroom. Things to consider include position of the waste pipe, style of waste, water point location, and the footprint of the old toilet.

Time for a new toilet or a modern update?

It’s amazing what a simple swap out of a toilet system can do to the look and feel of your bathroom.

Eze-Flow Plumbing can remove and dispose of your old toilet suites and provide a new suite of your choosing. Our plumbers have done many toilet conversions from old cisterns to the modern rimless back to wall toilet suites, and more recently bidets!

What Our Clients Say

Watch Eze-Flow Plumbing in Action

In this video, North Shore and Northern Beaches Plumber and founder of Eze-Flow Plumbing Chris Smith, shows you what can happen when you have a blocked toilet. In this case Chris inspects the accessible inspection point, by opening the drain outside that is behind the toilet. A water jetter is then used to help clear the blocked drain.

If you have a blocked toilet at your North Shore or Northern Beaches property, it is important to contact a plumber as soon as possible before the problem gets worse.
