Recognising the signs that your shower drain is starting to become blocked will save you time and money, by getting it fixed before it become a major problem.

1. Slow Drainage
One of the main signs that your shower drain is becoming blocked is there is a puddle of water in the shower recess. This puddle doesn’t drain away quickly even after you have finished your shower. Importantly, the puddle indicates there is a blockage that is preventing the water from draining away.
3. Unusual sounds from your shower drain
Another common sign that your shower drain is becoming blocked is when it makes a gurgling noise while you are having your shower. The gurgling is a sign that your shower drain is almost completely blocked and you should call a plumber immediately.
2. Bad Odour Coming From The Shower
Often a bad odour is a sign there is something causing a blockage in your shower drain. This could be muck, hair or slime that has built up in your drains, not only causing a partial blockage but a bad odour as well. This type of blockage often attracts drain flies.
4. Surcharging
If there is a blocked drain in your home, it means that water needs to go somewhere. It is common when there is a blockage for water to resurface in the bath and shower as the drains are usually the closest to the ground.

By far, the number one cause of a blocked shower drain is the buildup of hair, gunk and soap scum.
Hair in particular is a common cause of your shower drain becoming blocked. This is because hair wraps and entangles into a large matted ball and catches in the trap of the shower drainage system. Body oils and soap catches on the hair balls and blocks the shower from draining.
Traditional soap bars are another common cause of blocked shower drains. This is because soap bars are made with grease or fat. As a result, this grease or fat can build up in your shower drain and cause clogs that eventually cause the drain to become blocked.

STEP ONE - Locate Blockage
The first step in fixing a blocked shower drain is finding where the blockage is. We firstly remove the grate from both the shower and floor waste drain in order to visually inspect where the blockage is.
STEP TWO - Clear Blockage
Once the blockage has been identifited and located, we then decide on the best equipment to clear the shower drain. For example if the blockage is only in the grate or trap we would generally use a mini eel to remove it or acid to chemically dissolve the blockage. For more complicated blocked shower drains we can use the water jetter and CCTV drain camera as the blockage is further down the line and would need to be accessed from outside your property.
